Lawyer Not Allowed to Yunis Safarov
Baku / 18.01.20 / Turan: On January 17, the new lawyer Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was denied access to Yunis Safarov accused of the attempted assassination of the former head of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev, in the Baku pretrial detention center.
This was reported by Safarov’s uncle Fizuli Ismayilov.
Despite the fact that the lawyer submitted a warrant confirming his authority to be Safarov’s defense lawyer, he was not allowed to meet with the accused, Ismayilov said.
“Not admitting a lawyer to Yunis is a violation of the rights of both of them. What fair legal protection can we talk about? The meeting of the lawyer with the client is the most elementary right and it is not respected in relation to Yunis,” continued Ismayilov.
Earlier, Safarov himself in prison stated that after his arrest for a year and a half, he has not been given meetings or telephone conversations with relatives.
Safarov’s aunt stated that the cause of her nephew’s attempt on the former head of Ganja was the “insult” of the Ganja people by Veliyev.
In turn, the head of the public relations department of the Penitentiary Service, Mehman Sadigov, told Radio Azadlig that there were no obstacles to meetings between lawyers and defendants in the manner prescribed by law.
* On July 3, 2018 in Ganja an attempt was made on the then head of the city Elmar Veliyev. A Ganja native Yunis Safarov wounded him and his bodyguard.
After that, a protest rally in front of the Ganja administration building was scheduled for July 10. On that day, riots broke out in the city, during which two police officers were killed. Following this, mass arrests of believers and others began.
In these events, criminal proceedings were instituted against 70 people. The defendants were sentenced to imprisonment from 6 to 18 years. About 10 people were conditionally released. Cases of two groups of those arrested are pending before the court of appeal. The trial on Safarov and 9 others began in January. Two more persons involved in this case were liquidated during special operations of security officers. — 21C-
