Meeting of Advisory Council of Southern Gas Corridor

Baku / 15.02.18 / Turan: On February 15, a regular meeting of the Advisory Council of the Southern Gas Corridor opened in Baku.

The event is attended by the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the Energy Ministers of the countries participating in the Southern Gas Corridor, as well as the Vice President of the European Commission on Energy Maros Shefcovic.

The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) envisages the expansion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, as well as the construction of the TANAP gas pipeline in Turkey and its extension to Europe, TAP.

The estimated length of the project is 3,500 kilometers. The main goal of the project is to increase the security of gas supplies to Europe and reduce the share of Russia as a gas supplier. The declared cost of the project is about 45 billion US dollars.

The implementation of this project in its entirety involves connecting Turkmenistan and Iran as suppliers of gas to it. According to some sources, Russian Gazprom can also claim supplies to Europe through the infrastructure of Yuganskneftegaz.

Explicit interest in the project is shown by Turkmenistan, with which Azerbaijan is close to agreeing on the issue of dividing the bottom of the Caspian and disputed oil fields.

The first deliveries are planned to start first to Turkey in 2018 and to Europe in 2019. At the same time, in the first stage the capacity of the new gas pipeline is estimated at about 10 bcm per year, with the possibility of further expansion to 20 bcm per year. -02D-
