Israeli Parliament Rejects Bill on Recognition of Armenian Genocide

Baku / 15.02.18 / Turan: The Israeli Parliament on Wednesday, February 14, rejected the bill on recognition of the Armenian Genocide during the Ottoman Empire, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The project was introduced by the party Yesh Atid (There Is a Future). "There is no reason for the Knesset, which represents the people who survived the Holocaust, not to recognize the Armenian Genocide and not to establish a day of remembrance for it," the party leader Yair Lapid said. Nevertheless, the bill was supported only by 28 MPs, and 41 voted against.

The representative of the government of Israel, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Hotoveli spoke against the adoption of the law. She recalled that in 2015 the Knesset sent an official delegation to Yerevan on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the "Armenian Genocide", but said that Israel would not take an official position on this issue "because of its complexity and diplomatic consequences, as well as a pronounced political character ".

Various resolutions on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide have already been submitted for discussion in the Knesset five times, but they have also been rejected. -02D-
