Pashinyan offers unequal exchange
Baku/12.06.21/Turan: On Friday, in a speech to Armenian voters in the city of Berd, Acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan proposed his own resolution to the disputed territorial problem of the occupied enclaves.
Pashinyan believes that Armenia and Azerbaijan can agree and exchange enclaves, that is, leave the territorial situation as it has been since 1992. Official Baku has not yet responded to Pashinyan's message, but we can say with a high degree of probability that the idea will be rejected.
The reason is simple, and if you look at dimensions of the territories in question, then everything will become clear. Thus, the Armenian settlement of Bashkend (Artsvashen) occupied by the Azerbaijani army in 1992 and surrounded by the territory of the Gedabek district of Azerbaijan covers an area of 40 km.
It ought to be noted that the Armenian army occupied seven Azerbaijani enclave villages belonging to the Gazakh region and one village belonging to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Kyarki).
Below-cited are dimensions of their territory:
Yukhary Askipara - 8.6 sq km,
Ashagi Askipara - 9.1 sq km,
Baganis Ayrim - 40 sq km,
Barkhudarly - 10.1 sq km,
Sofulu - 22 sq km,
Gizil Khadzhyly - 11 sq km,
Hairimli - 4.1 sq km.
Kyarki (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic) - 19.2 km
In the meanwhile, total territory of the occupied seven villages of the Gazakh district and one village of NAR is 124 square kilometers which is more than three times from the territory of the settlement of Bashkend.
Thus, Pashinyan offers Azerbaijan an unequal exchange which in fact is acceptable. In addition, a deliberate concession on the part of Azerbaijan in the future might play a precedent to which the Armenians will refer when haggling over other sections of the internationally recognized border. -0-
