Principal Deputy Undersecretary for Defense Policy Kathleen Hicks Visited Azerbaijan
The Honorable Kathleen Hicks, Principal Deputy Undersecretary for Defense Policy, visited Baku, Azerbaijan on 17 January 2013, reads a press release of the US Embassy to Azerbaijan.
The purpose of this visit was to deepen the strategic partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Dr. Hicks discussed the bilateral security relationship, including counterterrorism cooperation, advancement of energy security, and future initiatives involving cargo air and maritime transit operations.
Dr. Hicks expressed her deep gratitude to Azerbaijan for their strong support for ongoing U.S. and Coalition operations in Afghanistan, and both affirmed their commitment to the country leading up to and following transition in 2014. Additionally, Dr. Hicks met with the Minister of Defense, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of National Security to discuss initiatives that will further strengthen US-Azerbaijan cooperation. Dr. Hicks also toured the new state-of-the-art cargo transit operations and facilities at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. -0-

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan published a set of proposals on his Facebook page aimed at establishing long-term peace in the region. Among them, he suggested that Azerbaijan should abandon mutual claims against Armenia, including in international courts. Other proposals include: refraining from using belligerent rhetoric, continuing the demarcation of borders, signing a peace agreement that is 90% ready, mutually implementing arms control, creating a joint mechanism to investigate violations of the ceasefire regime, and dissolving the OSCE Minsk Group.
