Provocation on the Alley of Martyrs
Baku/20.01.14/Turan : Police tried to prevent the laying of a wreath today on behalf of the National Council to the Memorial to the victims of the January tragedy.
The leaders of NCDF and the members of this structure came today to the ceremony to commemorate victims of events January 20, 1990.
When the NCDF people had already entered the Alley of Martyrs, the police stopped them and tried to take the wreath from them on the grounds that there is a ban on the passage in the Alley with wreaths.
The head of NCDF Jamil Hasanli told Turan the youth activists in the front ranks expressed their outrage at the police who tried to prevent further movement of the people.
However, under pressure from the opposition, the police cordon was breached and the members of the National Council continued to march to the graves of the martyrs.
"Although the police during the confrontation slightly marred the wreath, we managed to save it and put it on the memorial. We saw other wreaths there. Hence, the police tried to stop only the National Council," said Hasanli.
He condemned this provocation, calling the police action "meaningless and immoral."
"Each of us in our past activities could be in the place of the martyrs, while those, who now prevent us and show their arbitrariness to us, then only cared about their welfare," said Hasanli. - 06B -
