Sentencing Youth Activist Postponed

Originally scheduled for September 30 in the Nasimi district court, the verdict for Dayanat Babayev, a member of the Youth Committee of the Popular Front has been postponed to October 11. Turan was advised directly by Babayev.

According to him, the judge explained this delay was because the attorney did not appear. The judge said a verdict without a lawyer present would violate the rights of the accused.

Earlier, the prosecutor asked the court to sentence the activist to four years in prison. Dayanat Babayev is charged under Article 221.2 (hooliganism committed by a group of people). The investigation claims that on November 7, 2012 Babayev, along with another activist of PPFA, Rahim Musayev, violated public order in the center of Baku. Allegedly, in a drunken state, they insulted Tofig Salimov and caused him minor injuries.

Dressed in civilian clothes, Salimov introduced himself as a police officer and suggested that the activists follow him to the police station. When the young activists demanded his identity, he tried to flee. The young people reported it to a police officer nearby, but they were also detained. The case against the other defendant Rahim Musayev has been separated. -16B06-
