Social Network User Jailed for 3 Months

On May 9, Rashad Ramazanov, an active user of social networks, a philosopher and believer was charged under Article 234.4.3 of the Criminal Code (illegal possession and sale of drugs in large size). On May 10, Narimanov District Court ordered that Ramazanov (Rashad Hagigat Agaaddin) be detained for a period of three months. He is being held at the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (CDCO) of the Interior Ministry. According to Ramazanov’s lawyer, his client was detained on May 9 near the "20 January" metro station. According to police, nine grams of heroin were confiscated from his possession. Ramazanov rejected the accusation, has lawyer stated.

Ramazanov believes that he is being persecuted for political reasons because he criticized the authorities on social networks. Ramazanov holds a Doctor of Philosophy. If Ramazanov’s guilt is proven, Ramazanov could be imprisoned for up to 12 years with confiscation of his property.

On his Facebook page, Agaaddin posted articles and statuses about religion, freedom and justice (Rashad Heqiqet Ağaaddin.) In particular, he wrote ironically about the third presidential candidacy of Ilham Aliyev, when he wrote that probably Aliyev wants to be included the Guinness Book of Records.

He called the Azerbaijani authorities “diabolical Aliyev’s regime.” --16B06--
