Strasbourg to discuss "The unprecedented repression in Azerbaijan"
In the autumn session of PACE, in one of the halls of the Palace of Europe, October 2, hearings will be held on the topic: "The unprecedented repression in Azerbaijan."
Organizers of the event are international NGOs - International Media Support and the Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) in cooperation with the Article 19, Human Rights Watch and others.
The initiative is also supported by members of PACE - Mailis Reps (Estonia), Tiny Kox (The Netherlands), Michael McNamara (Ireland) and Peter Omtzigt (The Netherlands).
One of the speakers at the hearing will be the investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, which will inform about 98 political prisoners in the country.
The representative of IMS, Gulnara Akhundova will tell about human rights media and NGOs.
Maran Turner of Freedom Now will provide an overview of the legal analysis on the issue of political prisoners.
Giorgi Gogia of Human Rights Watch will talk about the general situation in Azerbaijan in the field of human rights, and present the findings of HRW.
Nathalie Losekoot of Article 19 will report on freedom of speech in Azerbaijan and on the situation of journalists.
Florian Irminger of Human Rights House Foundation will talk about the repression against human rights defenders, who collaborated with the Council of Europe, and the actions to be taken by the Council of Europe. -06D-
