Tehran believes in the imminent resumption of the activities of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran

Baku/25.12/23/Turan: At a press conference on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanani expressed hope  for the early resumption of the activities of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran. He reported on the trial of the man who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran in January this year and joint efforts "to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries."

According to him, the parties have defined a "roadmap" for the resumption of the work of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran.  "God willing, we will witness the resumption of the activity of the Azerbaijani embassy as soon as possible," Kanani said. He did not specify what kind of negotiations he was talking about and how the trial of the attacker of the Azerbaijani embassy ended.

In turn, the Iranian Embassy in Baku published a message that on December 23, the Attorneys General of Iran and Azerbaijan discussed "the latest agreements on bilateral legal cooperation, including the development of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Attorneys General of Iran and Azerbaijan" during an online conference.

It should be recalled that on January 27, 2023, Iranian citizen Yasin Huseynzade, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, attacked the Azerbaijani embassy. At the same time, the head of the embassy's security, Orkhan Askerov, was killed, and two more guards were injured.

The attacker was pushed out of the foyer of the building by one of the guards. After that, he continued to hammer the iron doors of the embassy with a sledgehammer. All this time, the Iranian police were quietly watching what was happening.

Baku regarded the incident as a terrorist act involving the official structures of Iran and demanded strict punishment of the organizers and an appropriate assessment of what happened. Immediately after that, the entire embassy staff was evacuated to Azerbaijan.

During the year, the Iranian authorities did not recognize the incident as a terrorist attack and did not inform about the punishment of the attacker. -02D-
