The White House explained criticism of USAID
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters what the Trump Administration found problematic in the activities of USAID. She listed programs that USAID had funded:
- Racial diversity and equality program in Serbia - $1.5 million;
- Production of a "transgender opera" in Colombia - $47,000;
- Release of comics about transgender individuals in Peru - $32,000.
She called this an example of ineffective spending. Later, the White House press office issued a statement accusing USAID of spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" to "support the cultivation of opium poppies and heroin production in Afghanistan," as well as "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to purchase food for "Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria."
