There Needs To Be Accountability For Russia’s War Crimes, State Dept says
Washington D.C./26.09.23/Turan: The United States on Tuesday reacted to Russia's attempts to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council more than 15 months after it was expelled for invading Ukraine, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"I think we’ve been pretty clear about where we stand on Russia’s approach to human rights. Secretary [Blinken] has been clear that we’ve seen Russia commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine," the spokesperson said.
Matthew Miller went on to add, "We’ve made clear that there needs to be accountability for those crimes that they have committed, and so certainly I think representation on a body devoted to human rights is not consistent with their actions in Ukraine."
Russia was kicked out of the UN's Human Rights body last April during an emergency special session called by the organization months after the invasion began.
