Transparency International: Corruption in Azerbaijan Intensified
Baku / 01.29.1919 / Turan: In terms of corruption, Azerbaijan occupies the 152nd place among 180 countries of the world. Thus, the country dropped 30 points lower than last year. These are the findings of the Corruption Index, published on January 29 by Transparency International.
The organization"s report notes that over the past five years, there has been a positive trend in the level of corruption in Azerbaijan. However, last year there were revealed facts of bribing European structures and activists from Azerbaijan in order to hide the negative processes in the country. In particular, the report Azerbaijan Laundromat revealed large-scale facts of organized bribery and transfer of huge sums of money to Council of Europe deputies, the report noted.
It should be noted that Georgia ranked 41st in the Corruption Index, Armenia - 105th, Russia and Iran - 138th.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.

During the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 14, a group of activists staged a protest condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The activists also denounced countries that supply oil and weapons to nations waging aggressive wars. The protest featured placards with slogans such as: "From fossil fuels to peace!", "End war crimes!", "Punish the aggressor!", and "Phase out fossil fuel use to achieve peace!" among others.
