UN expert: Azerbaijan should improve its own human rights record

Philippe Bolopion, UN director at the New York-based Human-RightsWatch, believes, as a new member of the Security Council, Azerbaijan should “lead by example and improve its own human rights record, including by decriminalizing libel, releasing political prisoners, ensuring freedom of association and assembly, as well as freedom of expression and religion”, he told to TURAN’s Washington DC correspondent. Asked what kind of challenges Azerbaijan will face at the SC, he said, “it will have to pronounce itself on some of the most pressing human rights challenges the world faces and make its vote count in defenseof victims”. Human-Rights Watch UN director also pointed out that, countries often see a seat on the Security Council as a way to increase their global standing and gain more of a say in the way world affairs are run.
“With this power come responsibilities, including uphold the universal values of the charter and help protect people at risk”.
When reminded that Baku often complains that although it does everything to gain the West’ support on the international tribunes, it never happens, Bolopoin said, “The Azeri) government should be lessconcerned about gaining the West’s support and more concerned about genuinely improving its human rights record, which will not only improve its image but also greatly benefit its people”.
