US Representative to OSCE Condemns Verdict on Giyas Ibrahimov
The US Ambassador to the OSCE Permanent Council, Daniel Bayer condemned the sentence of 10 years in jail on the Azerbaijani youth activist Giyas Ibrahimov and called on Baku to fulfill its obligations in the field of human rights to the OSCE and other international organizations.
“The US is concerned about the imposition of a sentence of imprisonment for 10 years on charges of drug trafficking on the NIDA activist Giyas Ibrahimov in Azerbaijan on October 25. This arrest is seen as political persecution. According to Amnesty International, Ibrahimov was subjected to torture for the purpose of knocking out recognition of serious crimes,” said Bayer.
“We also urge the Azerbaijani government to release Giyas Ibrahimov and others arrested for the realization of the inalienable freedoms in a democratic society, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” said Bayer.
Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were arrested after they painted political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev in Baku on May 10 and were arrested just for that. -06D-
