US to build a new military airfield near Tbilisi
Tbilisi/13.11.18/Turan: The United States and Georgia will build a new military airfield at the Vaziani military base near Tbilisi, said Steve Lyons, commander of the US Transportation Command, who is in Georgia. In turn, Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria said that the new airfield will be part of the NATO Defense Readiness Center (GDRP).
This initiative was proposed by Levan Isoria in October in Brussels at a meeting of the Georgia-NATO Commission. The center is designed to retrain Georgian troops for three years with the support of the United States. A program to increase Georgia"s defense readiness is being developed and implemented by the United States and the Georgian Armed Forces.
According to the news agency Agenda.ge with reference to the Ministry of Defense, funds for the new airfield will be allocated both from the US budget and from Georgia.
Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, at a meeting with General Lyons, said that the new airfield would provide more opportunities for local and international military exercises in Georgia. -02D-
