Yasamal Court Dismisses Complaint of Mehman Aliyevs Detention
Baku / 31.08.17 / Turan: Yasamal Court rejected the complaint about the detention of the director of Turan News Agency, Mehman Aliyev, today.
Mehman Aliyev was arbitrarily detained on August 24, without any grounds for doing so and with serious procedural violations.
On August 24, Mehman Aliyev was summoned for questioning to the Ministry of Taxes as a witness in the criminal case against the agency Turan.
Despite the fact that Mehman Aliyev arrived at the Ministry with his lawyer, the lawyer was informed that the status of the journalist had changed from "a witness to a suspect" and refused to participate in the interrogation.
On August 25, the court sent Mehman Aliyev under arrest on charges of tax evasion, abuse of power and illegal entrepreneurship.
Mehman Aliyev rejected all the charges. International organizations condemned the arrest of Mehman Aliyev and regarded it as an attack on the last remaining independent media outlet in Azerbaijan. -0--
