Yerevan does not agree on the participation of I. Aliyev at the CSTO summit
Baku / 08.11.18 / Turan: The idea of inviting Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the summit in Astana as a guest was discussed at the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), two sources preparing the meetings of the Collective Security Council opened on November 8 told the Kommersant newspaper.
According to them, the idea belongs to Kazakh President Nazarbayev, which was also supported by the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Aliyev was ready to visit Astana, but the Armenian side opposed this idea.
"Heads of countries that are not members of the alliance can take part in CSTO events, if all members of the organization agree with this," explained a senior official in the delegation of one of the organization"s members.
When being asked to comment on the idea of inviting Aliyev to Astana, the spokeswoman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan said: "We do not have such information."
The CSTO includes: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
Recently, representatives of Baku and Moscow have spoken about the possibility of Azerbaijan"s joining the CSTO as an observer, but this idea was sharply criticized by Yerevan, saying that it was blocking such a proposal. -02D-
