Alexander Goltz: NATO and Russia do not want a major war because Syria

Russian expert, editor in chief of newspaper "Daily Journal" Alexander Goltz in an interview with Turan gave an assessment of the situation around the conflict in Syria and Moscow's policy.  Can you talk about Moscow's strategy in this situation, or the Kremlin acts impulsively?

Asking this question Goltz said that  there is such a strategy, and it provides  support  for  Assad’s regime. But this is only part of the strategy. "Putin has openly declared that denies peoples in the struggle for liberation from autocratic leaders. He believes that all protests and the color revolutions  are  the machinations of the West," said the expert.

Another part of Putin's strategy - is the desire to get out of international isolation after Ukraine. "He wants to create a situation where the West will have to talk to him. And now, to prevent further sliding into a major conflict, Western leaders  talk to him. Another motive by Putin - is the desire to protect themselves from such a revolution in Russia," continued Goltz.

How much is likely  sliding  of the conflict to  a real war?

Asking  this question Alexander Goltz  said he did not believe in large-scale actions, but it is likely  that the Kremlin wanted to "fight back" and to shoot down a Turkish plane.

Neither Moscow nor NATO  are ready to large-scale hostilities, it is not ready. "In order to maintain large-scale operations  they  need  to keep 300,000  people. And Russia has other plans - to hold  Assad regime. Therefore, we should not expect that the conflict will take a large-scale character. The second reason against it is that NATO does not want it. Now Western leaders urge Ankara to exercise restraint and not to go to a serious confrontation. In addition, NATO believed that the responsibility for the worsening situation lies with Turkey and  they need not shoot down the aircraft. For this reason, the reaction of the Alliance was so soft," says Goltz.

Being asked how to characterize the mood of Russian society after the destruction of the aircraft, the expert said - is frank "militaristic hysteria." "Similar sentiments are incited artificially. This is done on purpose. The goal is simple - to convince people that  they are surrounded by enemies, and any  people criticizing  the authorities is  enemy.  Under such a situation and such a mood  it is easier to run the country, " said Goltz. -02В-
