Rasul Jafarov hopes for reconciliation with the authorities
The convicted human rights activist Rasul Jafarov was transferred from the jail of Kurdakhani to prison N10 in the village of Darnagul. Through his lawyer, he gave answers to the question from Turan on the anniversary of his arrest.
Jafarov said the past year was lost. All that time he was trying to convince the authorities that his whole activity was conciliatory by nature.
"Before and after the arrest, I respect the principle of an independent human rights activist, without passing the red line," he said.
Even during the preliminary investigation on October 15, 2014, he appealed to the president of the country. Recently, he has paid the tax debt to the state budget.
Jafarov hopes his outstretched hand will find counter understanding. "I want to believe that they will respond to my appeal, and I will be released," said Jafarov.
Jafarov did not complain about conditions of detention and treatment.
He spent a year in jail, and had good relations with management and staff.
Once a quarter staff of the Ombudsman and the International Committee of the Red Cross visited him. Doctors were also interested in his health.
From a physical and psychological point of view Jafarov also feels normal.
In prison, he read a lot, listens to the radio, watches the news and soccer matches.
"The local and the international community did all they could for my protection. At the last trial in the Court of Appeal, I saw new faces that were not in previous meetings and it was nice," said Jafarov.
Jafarov was arrested on 2 August, 2014 on charges of illegal business, tax evasion, and abuse of power.
On April 16, 2015 he was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. On July 31 Baku Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to three months.
Amnesty International considers Jafarov " aprisoner of conscience".
In numerous statements by international organizations, including the Council of Europe, European Union and others called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release Jafarov and other human rights defenders who were arrested on trumped up charges. -06B-
