2,250 Mosques Functioning in Azerbaijan
Baku / 11.01.17 / Turan: 2,250 mosques operate in Azerbaijan, and 136 of them are located in Baku. This was reported by the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations.
In addition, there are 14 churches and 7 synagogues in the country.
There are also 748 sanctuaries and places of worship registered in the country, including 25 in the Baku-Absheron region.
After the start of re-registration of religious communities (01.09.2009), 793 structures passed state registration, including 765 Islamic and 28 non-Islamic communities.
Among the latter, 17 are Christian, 8 are Judaic, 1 is Krishna, and 2 are Baha'i.
In 2017 the process of registration of religious educational institutions began. Ten of them received state registration and are now called not madrasah, but colleges. -05D06-

On January 29, municipal elections were held in Azerbaijan, with over 16,000 candidates participating across 118 constituencies. The Central Election Commission (CEC) has already announced the names of the leading candidates on its website. Hours after the election, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov stated at a briefing that 413 out of 685 municipalities had already been formed, with 7,791 candidates identified as leaders. According to him, elections proceeded normally in all constituencies, and no complaints were received by his office. However, independent candidates and experts claim that there were violations during the election process.

The arrest was first reported by Kommersant and Izvestia, citing sources, and later corroborated by law enforcement contacts through RIA Novosti and TASS.
