Baku/10.05.19/Turan: Activists expressed concern about the health and the treatment of religious prisoners. The participants of the round table on the topic "Repressions and torture of political prisoners", organized by the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Believers of Political Prisoners on May 10, called on the authorities to investigate the facts of torture of believers, provide them with medical assistance, and restore their rights.
Opening the meeting, the co-chairman of the committee, Eldaniz Guliyev, expressed concern about the reports of torture and inhuman treatment of believers in places of detention. The defendants of the 2018 Ganja events are subjected to especially harsh treatment. "The fact that they get up with these people is not compatible either with law or with humanism. The matter reached the point that one of the prisoners was beaten and hung up by the legs just because he asked the warden for medicine," Guliyev said.
The other co-chairman of the committee, Rovshan Ahmedli, urged the public not to remain indifferent to arbitrariness over the political prisoner"s believers. According to him, civil society should consolidate and demand the cessation of torture, harassment, and unjustified prosecution of all political prisoners, including religious activists.
Writer Zumrug Yagmur drew attention to the deterioration of the health of believers. Abbas Huseynov, because of torture in Gobustan prison, suffers from accumulating fluid in his leg. Jabbar Jabbarov suffers from liver disease. Jeyhun Aliyev and Sahil Rzaly also have serious problems. Babek Hasanov has problems with the liver and spine.
The convicted Shamil Abdulaliyev, who needs an operation because of the wound, got during a special operation in Nardaran. Otherwise, he is threatened with a shortening of his leg by 15 cm. However, not all these prisoners receive quality medical care.
The meeting resulted in the adopting a statement demanding from the authorities to ensure objectivity of investigations, to prevent illegal forms of treatment of prisoners, to respect their rights and to punish those responsible for torture and falsification of criminal cases. -21C06--
