Arrest of Farman Jeyranli Political Order, His Lawyer Says

Baku / 30.06.17 / Turan: The lawyer Natalie Bezhashvili, who defends the interests of the Azerbaijani businessman Farman Jeyranli, who was arrested in Georgia, called her client's case "a shameful phenomenon".

In her statement, the lawyer notes that she was "horrified" after reading the materials of the criminal case. "Maybe in the history of Georgia there has not been such a shameful decision," she said, referring to the arrest of Jeyranli.

Recall that Jeyranli was detained on May 22, 2017, and the court arrested him for two months on charges under articles 180 and 247 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. In particular, the investigation incriminates Jeyranli carrying out illegal liver transplantation and death of two patients as a result of that in the Lancet clinic, co-owner of which he is. Due to the conduct of operations without proper authorization, the license of the clinic was canceled. The private clinic Lancet operated for three years and was established with private funds and loans from Turkish banks. Jeyranli was the Chief Surgeon of Azerbaijan once, but after the conflict with the then Minister of Health Ali Insanov, he left Azerbaijan and transferred his business to Georgia.

According to the lawyer, charges have been brought against Jeyranli under Article 247, paragraph 1 (concealing information threatening life and health), and subparagraph (b) of part 3 of Article 180 (attempt of mass fraud).

"The funniest thing is that as a workplace of Farman Jeyranli, it is indicated that he is the director of the clinic, although another man works in this position. Professor Jeyranli is the founder of the clinic and is not responsible for its activities," Bezhashvili said.

The clinic has its own general director, clinical director, financial director, and legal and advertising department. If the director of the clinic, that is, the head physician is responsible for the treatment of patients, as follows from the court decisions, why did they arrest Jeyranli? Is not this absurd?! Jeyranli is not the chief doctor, not the CFO, and he did not operate on patients, etc. There are no mentions of Jeyranli in the patients' medical history, the lawyer says.

As for the charge of fraud, the patients for liver transplantation were offered the lowest prices in the world. The first patient was given a check for the money paid to the cashier.

The relatives of the second patient still have not paid for the operation. In this case, there can be no question of any appropriation, the lawyer said.
