At the trial in the case of Aziz Orujev
Baku / 10.10.17 / Turan: The trial of the director of Internet TV Kanal-13 "Aziz Orujov began today in the Baku Serious Crimes Court, under the chairmanship of Mirza Khankishiyev. He was arrested on May 2 in administrative order for 30 days for disobeying the police. At the end of this period, he was charged with criminal charges under articles 192.2.2 (illegal business with the extraction of large income) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers, which entailed grave consequences) of the Criminal Code.
The journalist rejected accusations. Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.
Lawyer Javad Javadov petitioned to change the measure of restraint for house arrest or release on bail, but the petition was rejected. Then the prosecutor read out the indictment. Orujov denied the charges. The court also heard testimony of witnesses.
The mother of the accused Almaz Hasanova said that after her other son Anar Orujov left the country, Aziz headed the NGO Caucasus Media Research Center, but there was no real activity of the organization. According to her, the brothers together created an organization, received grants, and implemented projects.
"Aziz is accused of misappropriating money ... I do not know whether there is in the law such that the brother must bear punishment for his brother? If something was insignificant, then Anar did it, Aziz did not sign any documents, "Hasanova said.
Orujov's wife Lamiya Orujeva said that she also worked for "Kanal 13".
"Aziz on the channel was an ordinary journalist. After Anar left, Aziz began to run the TV channel, "she said. To pay salaries to employees, Aziz Orujov worked as a driver on an "Uber" taxi in the evening, she said. The trial will continue on October 17. -16D06-
