Authorities Do Not Allow PMA Rallies
Baku / 23.05.19 / Turan: Agasif Shakiroglu, a member of the board of the Popular Movement of Azerbaijan (PMA), chairman of the Future of Azerbaijan Party, was invited to the Mayor"s Office of Baku, where he was told that the authorities did not allow the rally on May 25.
Shakiroglu himself told Turan that the Mayor"s Office explained the ban with the fact that the Azerbaijani President was negotiating on a solution to the Karabakh problem, so there is no need to hold a rally.
"But we planned the action not only in connection with the Karabakh problem. The meeting was also devoted to economic and social issues.
We consider the position of the authorities unreasonable. In fact, the authorities have shown no respect for the freedom of assembly," Shakiroglu said.
According to him, the authorities did not sanction the next PMA rally scheduled for May 28.
He also reported on detentions since May 18 of the members of the PMA Board. Of the 26 members of the Board, 19 are currently in custody. In addition, about 20 activists were detained. Thus, about 40 PMA people are in custody.
* The PMA was established on January 26, 2019.
