Azadlig Newspapers Claim Rejected
Baku / 18.04.17 / Turan: Administrative Economic Court No. 1 of Baku city on April 17 rejected the claim of the Azadlig newspaper and its website Azadliq.info against the Department of Small Business at the Ministry of Taxes.
The lawyer of the plaintiff Samad Rahimov said that in connection with the arrest of the financial director of the Azadlig newspaper Faig Amirov, deputy prosecutor Rustam Usubov sent a presentation to the Nasimi court and asked for an audit of the tax activity of the publication.
The Nasimi court in 2016 instructed the Ministry of Taxes to check the activities of the newspaper for 2010-2016.
In turn, Azadlig addressed Administrative Economic Court No. 1 and demanded a tax audit within the requirements of the law, that is, for the period in 2013-2016, and the website azadliq.info - from 2015, that is, the moment of its registration as an LLC. However, the court dismissed the claim.
Rahimov said he did not receive a written decision of the Court of Appeal to dismiss the claim and therefore cannot say how the refusal is justified. After receiving a written decision of the court and consultations with the responsible persons of Azadlig, an appropriate appeal will be filed, the lawyer said.
The financial director of Azadlig, Faig Amirov, was arrested in August 2016 on false accusations of inciting religious hatred. After his arrest, the newspaper was forced to suspend the publication.
Further, a tax audit of the newspaper for 2010-2016 was appointed. The majority of the newspaper's employees were interrogated by the Investigation Department for Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office.
Finally, on April 17 a new charge of tax evasion and illegal entrepreneurship was raised against Amirov. -0-
