Bakhtiyar Hajiyev spends 14 days on a hunger strike in a pre-trial detention center
Baku / 28.12.22 / Turan: Public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev has been on a hunger strike in the pre-trial detention center for the 14th day demanding his release.
On December 28, Hajiyev was visited by lawyers Shahla Gumbatova, Zibeyda Sadigova and Agil Laij in Baku SIZO-1.
As Humbatova told Turan, after Hajiyev was put on a drip on December 27, his condition somewhat stabilized.
Today, however, the effect of the drugs began to wear off, and he again began to weaken, feel dizzy, lose his balance.
At the same time, the lawyer noted that Hajiyev is in the medical unit of the pre-trial detention center under medical supervision.
The defense hopes that on December 29, the Khatai District Court will satisfy the second request to transfer Hajiyev to house arrest.
For, in case of being left in custody, Hajiyev intends to continue the hunger strike. At the same time, due to the holidays, lawyers will not be able to visit him for the next 6 days. And given that Hajiyev was banned from making phone calls, there will be no information about him all this time. "He himself noted that during this period there could be a provocation against him. Therefore, it would be better if he is at home," the lawyer said.
A long hunger strike undermined Hajiyev’s immunity even in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, and this increases the risk of COVID-19.
According to the lawyer, the detention of Hajiyev is unlawful not only for humanitarian reasons, but also taking into account the nature of the alleged crimes, which do not pose a great public danger.
Representatives of the Prison Service were not available for comment.
* Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was detained on December 9 on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days. On December 15, Hajiyev announced a promise to go on an indefinite hunger strike demanding his release from custody.-03/06D-
