Chief Editor of Jam.az Accused of Extortion
The Chief Editor of the website Jam.az Fikret Faramazoglu is charged with extortion. His lawyer Nemat Karimli told Turan.
According to him, the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime at the Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated a criminal case under Article 182 (extortion by threats) of the Criminal Code. On July 2 the court chose a preventive measure of arrest for three months against Faramazoglu.
The lawyer noted that the journalist is not allowed to communicate with his family members. The lawyer has not been able to meet with Faramazoglu and got the court's decision only today. The lawyer does not know exactly who filed the complaint against Faramazoglu.
Previously, the journalist’s wife said some people in plain clothes searched the journalist's apartment and confiscated his laptop, disks and documents without a warrant.
Faramazoglu was once brought to justice 10 years ago. Then, as the chief editor of the newspaper 24 Hours, he was sentenced to a year of imprisonment on the lawsuit by Interior Minister Ramil Usubov on protection of honor and dignity.
The website Jam.az is not different for any particular political or ideological orientation. The content abounds sharply critical articles against officials of various ranks and business representatives.
In 2015, the Press Council cautioned the website for the violation of professional ethics. In 2016 there was also a warning from the Prosecutor General's Office. -03 / 06D-
