Chingiz Abdullaev: No one can ignore the opinion of the PEN Club
The Committee to Protect Rights of young Azerbaijani poets Farid Hussein and Shahriyar Hajizade, arrested in Iran, is going to take several steps to help their fate.
The head of the Azerbaijani PEN-Club, writer Chingiz Abdullayev, called on PEN-Clubs and human rights organizations of the world to condemn the arrest of the young poets and demand their release. The appeal has already received support.
According to Chingiz Abdullayev, PEN-Clubs in Russia, Turkey, France, and Czech Republic supported the appeal.
The Committee intends to appeal to the president of Iran to take steps to protect the rights of the Azerbaijani citizens. They plan to send a special mission to Iran to solve the problem. The mission will consist of two or three persons, including a lawyer.
Abdullayev believes that the rights of Azerbaijani poets have been seriously violated. "I am a lawyer, an expert on international law, which states that after the arrest of a foreign citizen, within 24 hours, the consulate of the country should be notified and a lawyer should be provided," said Abdullayev.
On the other hand, we observe not only violations of human rights, but also the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic service. No answer has been received to the appeals of the Consular Service of Azerbaijan about the fate of those arrested, and there is no official information on what they are accused of.
According to Abdullayev, at a time when EU sanctions banning the purchase of Iranian oil have come into force, this country does not need another campaign of international condemnation.
"We would not want that. Iran is a neighboring country, and we do not want anything bad to happen to its people. We only insist that the rights of our citizens be enforced in accordance with the laws of Iran itself, and international conventions. Moreover, the Azerbaijani poets traveled to Iran on their invitation," said Abdullayev.
In response to being asked if the intervention of the international community of PEN-Clubs will help, Abdullayev said that there has not been a single case of ignoring the appeals of the PEN-Clubs.
"This is an authoritative structure, including all the Nobel laureates, members of royal families, aristocratic families, and no one, even the most bloody regime, has allowed itself to ignore the opinion of the Pen-Clubs", said Abdullayev.
The head of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan, Anar, appealed to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, to use his influence to liberate the Azerbaijani poets.
The Azerbaijani poets were arrested on May 2 in Tabriz, and according to unofficial information, they are accused of espionage and drug trafficking. —06B--
