City Hall threatens residents of emergency house with forced eviction
Baku/08.08.19/Turan: Residents of a three-story emergency building in 150 Yasamal district of Baku, Mirza Agi Aliyev Street, refuse to leave their apartments.
The residents of 43 apartments are not satisfied with low amounts of compensation and do not want to leave their housing. They stated this to RadioAzadlig.
Residents complain that they are offered low compensation; they cannot acquire the appropriate area within the city.
"We are ready to go out, and we ourselves are afraid to live here, but they give us only 30 thousand manats. What can we buy with this money? Last week, the head of the city, Eldar Azizov, came. He said, "Why are you not happy, for 30 thousand I will buy 30 apartments," said one of the residents.
The press service of the Baku City Executive Power stated that the house is in disrepair and may collapse at any time; however, some residents refuse to leave it.
The life of the building, built in 1889, has long expired. Back in 1989, the Executive Committee of the Baku Council of People's Deputies recognized the building as emergency and subject to demolition. At the same time, the resettlement of tenants began, and 23 families were resettled. Subsequently, internally displaced persons settled here. However, over the past 30 years, the condition of the building has deteriorated even more, it is completely unsuitable for life, which created a threat to people's lives.
According to the head of the press service of the mayor"s office, Israfil Karimov, the resettlement of residents began at the expense of state funds. Twenty-five out of 43 families have moved out. However, some residents put forward "unrealistic demands" and refuse to leave the building.
Six families are internally displaced persons. They were offered new repaired apartments in the Gobupark complex for internally displaced persons. Taking into account the family composition, some of them were offered two apartments. However, these citizens, in addition to this, also want monetary compensation.
Another seven families live in rooms of 12-15 square meters meter. They were offered maximum financial assistance, but they also do not want to move out. If people do not want to understand that they and their relatives are at risk, and then tenants can be forcibly evicted, the representative of the city hall noted. -21C-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
