
Preliminary hearing to examine complaints by the convicted on the Ismayilli events took place in the Sheki Court of Appeal on May 20. On March 17, 2013 Sheki Serious Crimes Court sentenced 18 defendants in connection with the riots in Ismailly region on 23-24 January 2013.
The leader of the REAL Movement Ilgar Mamedov was sentenced to 7 years in prison, the deputy chairman of the party " Musavat", Tofig Yagublu to 5 years. Other eight people were sentenced to eight years of imprisonment. The same number of defendants were sentenced on probation.
Today, the trial began the hour and a half late, and delivery of the accused was delayed. In the courtroom ten people were put in an iron cage what caused protests of the accused. Thereafter, Ilgar Mammadov , Tofig Yagublu and Elshan Gurbanov were allowed to seat near the lawyers.
A lawyer Vidadi Jabbarov said that the prosecution remains at the same position, and considers all the defendants guilty. All lawyers made a motion to change the measure of restraint and release his client on them during the proceedings in the Court of Appeal.
A lawyer Fuad Agayev said that the minutes of the trials were not presented the lawyers for familiarizing. He demanded the termination of the lawsuit and the release of Mamedov for lack of guilt.
Mamedov himself refused to stand when the judge addressed him, saying that there is no trial, no judges, because they perform a political order; and Tofig Yagublu called the judges cheaters without conscience.
A judge Inshallah Khudiyev rejected most applications , including the change the preventive measure and scheduled trial on the merits on June 5.
However , the judge granted the motion for partial conducting a judicial investigation on an appeal.
Nemat Kerimli, a lawyer of Yagublu told Turan, that the protection was dissatisfied with the decision of the court, but will not file an appeal to the Supreme Court , as the court is unlikely to satisfy the complaint, and the trial will be only delayed. The European Court of Human Rights has already started on the complaint of Yagublu, the lawyer said.
* On May 22 the ECHR will announce a decision on an appeal against the arrest Mamedov. Earlier the EU foreign ministers of France and Britain , the U.S. Embassy condemned the sentence against
Mamedov and Yagublu. Amnesty International recognized Yagublu and Mamedov "prisoners of conscience." -06B -
