Convicted PFPA Activist Not Allowed to Attend His Father`s Funeral

The authorities did not release the convicted activist of the Popular Front Party Mammad Ibrahim to his farther’s funeral. The funeral took place on September 4, PFPA deputy chairman Gezal Bayramli told Turan. The family’s appeal with a request to release Ibrahim for the funeral remained unanswered.

* Ibrahim was arrested on September 30 last year on charges of disorderly conduct (221.1) (the complaint had been filed by Mikail Guliyev, former member of PFPA). Subsequently, this article was reclassified to a harder charge under article 221.2.2, on which Ibrahim faced up to five years in prison. During the trial at first instance all the prosecution witnesses confirmed Ibrahim's innocence and his non-use of force against those recognized as the victims by the investigation. Ibrahim also denied the charges, saying that he was being persecuted for opposition political activity. Nevertheless, the Narimanov District Court on March 15 admitted Ibrahim guilty and sentenced him to 3 years in prison. Human rights organizations have recognized him a political prisoner. -03B-
