Court of Appeal Leaves Journalist Aziz Orujov under Arrest
Baku / 29.06.17 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal rejected a complaint about the refusal to transfer under home arrest or release on bail of the executive director of Channel-13 TV Aziz Orujov.
As the lawyer Javad Javadov told Turan, the complaint was filed against the decision of the Nasimi District Court on June 15. The lawyer noted that a complaint will now be sent to the European Court of Human Rights. "The charges brought against Aziz Orujov have no actual or legal basis. The charges are fabricated," the lawyer said.
Aziz Orujov was arrested administratively for 30 days on May 2. After the expiration of the arrest, the journalist was charged with new charges: under articles 192.2.2 (illegal business with the extraction of a large income) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers that entailed grave consequences) of the Criminal Code. The Nasimi court arrested him for 4 months.
Orujov denies the charges and believes they are related to his journalistic activities.
Reporters Without Borders condemned the criminal prosecution of Orujov and other journalists recently arrested in Azerbaijan. -16D06-
