Court of Appeal Upholds Verdict on Anar Mammadov
Baku / 05.06.19 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal on June 4 upheld the conviction of the chief editor of the criminal.az website, Anar Mammadov. The defense does not agree with the decision of the appeals instance and intends to file a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan.
The journalist was sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment with a two-year probation period on charges of anti-state appeals, abuse of power and official forgery in March. The reason for criminal prosecution was the publication on the website criminal.az about the assassination attempt on the former head of the city of Ganja Elmar Veliyev.
The verdict on Mammadov was condemned by a number of international journalistic organizations, as well as by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Harlem Desir.
It should be noted that in the run-up to the consideration of Mammadovəs appeal, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists also called on the Azerbaijani authorities to drop charges against him and allow him to work freely. CPJ pointed to the unfounded prosecution of Mammadov for the publication.
"Informing the general public about important events is what journalists do, and the authorities should support this work, and not punish reporters," said Gulnoza Said, CPJ Program Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia. -06D--
