Dormitory Residents Prepare to Picket the Presidential Administration

Every Tuesday, residents of the hostel of the garment factory named after Z. Tagiyev plan to picket the presidential administration as long as their concerns are not addressed. Human rights activist Alekper Mamedov made that statement at today's press conference at the Media Center. According to him, it is impossible to delay this question any longer. Authorities must understand their responsibility to the people, who are virtually left in the street.

After an earthquake in Baku in 2000, the building sustained a crack and has become uninhabitable. Cabinet decided to allocate 40 acres for the construction of a new building, where 160 families have been relocated. In 2003, construction began and it was completed in May 2012. Only 80 families moved into the new building, which is an 18-storey double block house with 436 apartments. Built by the construction company Umid, the building has not given apartments to the 80 families that stayed in the original hostel, and is selling the units.

At the same time, the decision of the Cabinet to repair the hostel is a failure, since the building is an emergency, according to the conclusion of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The dormitory residents said that the building has no heating; children and elderly residents are often sick, and as winter arrives, the situation may be exacerbated.

The residents have repeatedly appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office to investigate the case, thinking that they were the victims of corruption and fraud. To date, there has been no response to their requests. -04C-
