Elchin Mamed's health who is in jail N 16, worsened
Baku/09.06.21/Turan: The health of human rights activist and journalist Elchin Mamed, who is in jail N 16 has sharply deteriorated, his mother Rahila Mammadli told. On Sunday evening, her son lost consciousness due to lack of treatment, she said.
“My son was a carrier of hepatitis C, and after the arrest his health worsened. In the pre-trial detention center in Shuvelan, he was held in unsanitary conditions. In prison, he developed varicose veins and problems with the prostate, but he was not transferred to the prison hospital,” Rahila Mammadli said.
Saadat Bananurly, a member of the monitoring group of Azerbaijani human rights organizations, told Turan that today she contacted jail N16. According to her, Elchin is currently in the medical unit and his health has returned to normal. The issue of transfer to the Medical Institution of the Penitentiary Service is being considered, she said.
*On October 17, 2020, the Sumgayit city court sentenced Elchin Mamed to 4 years in prison, finding him guilty of "theft" and "illegal storage of ammunition and weapons."
The human rights defender was arrested in March 2020. A woman to whom he provided legal assistance complained about him. The previously mentioned woman also complained about the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov.
Mamed explained his arrest with his human rights activities. International organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FİACAT and others condemned the arrest of Mamed. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.-06B-
