Baku/24.06.23/Turan: Feminists Gulnara Mehdiyeva, Narmin Shahmarzade and Sanubar Heydarova on June 23 tried to hold a flash mob at a reception at the American Embassy on the occasion of US Independence Day.
During the reception, they took off their scarves and exposed a black hand clutching at the throat.
“This is a suffocating hand, it symbolizes the brutal suppression of the protest action in the village of Soyudlu, the violence against journalists there, the arrests of activists for criticizing these actions of the security forces. We wanted to show the representatives of the authorities and opposition of Azerbaijan present at the event that now is not the time to celebrate the Independence Day of a foreign country, but we need to take care of the problems of our own people,” Mehdiyeva said.
When the girls talked about the goals of their action on a video camera head of AbzasMedia Ulvi Hasanli, the employees demanded to stop recording.
The girls were asked to leave the territory of the embassy, and Gasanli, the guards of the diplomatic mission, were forcibly put on the street and handed over to the police there. All activists and Gasanli were taken away to the 21st branch of the Nasimi district police department of Baku and was soon released. -06V-
