Former chief of International Bank of Azerbaijan does not consider himself a political prisoner
Baku / 08.05.17 / Turan: Jahangir Hajiyev, the former head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), circulated a statement in the media, informing him that he did not apply to any structures to recognize him as political prisoner. "I, Jahangir Hajiyev, did not take any steps to recognize me as a political prisoner. My lawyers did not apply to any structures and individuals for such a request," the lawyer said in a statement. Thus, Hajiyev responded to a number of media reports on this topic.
"I believe that these messages are written by order. Their customers are people who are interested in concealing from the public the truths associated with the "International Bank", Hajiyev said vaguely, without specifying what and whom he means.
However, he notes that the trial of him was far from the standards of fair justice.
In turn, lawyers say that although Hajiyev does not recognize himself as a political prisoner, gross violations of procedural legislation in his case fall under the criterion of "political prisoner".
Hajiyev was arrested on December 5, 2015 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for misappropriation, abuse of authority, forgery. The investigation accused Hajiyev of extradition of unsecured loans for large amounts and not targeted use of public funds. Hajiyev did not recognize himself guilty. -06D-
