Human Rights Activist R. Jafarov Calls for Release of Azerbaijani Hostages

The arrested human rights activist Rasul Jafarov strongly condemned the sentence passed on two Kelbajar people by the Karabakh separatists. He described the sentence on Dilgam Askerov and Shahbaz Guliyev as a serious threat to the peace process.

The statement by Jafarov says the organization of the trial on the prisoners of war and bringing them to justice is a flagrant violation of international instruments on human rights. He called on the international human rights community to increasingly relate to this issue and to increase efforts for the release of the prisoners of war.

At the same time, Jafarov urged the Azerbaijani authorities to immediately release civil society activists in order to strengthen their international image and their position in the liberation of the prisoners of war.

    * On December 29 the court in Khankendi read a verdict on two Kelbajar men accused by the Karabakh separatists of sabotage and espionage. Dilgam Askerov was sentenced to life imprisonment, and Shahbaz Guliyev was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Recall that the former inhabitants of the Kelbajar district occupied by Armenians were arrested in June and accused of sabotage by the Armenians. According to the Armenian side, Askerov, Guliyev and the third member of the group, Hasan Hasanov, were saboteurs, who killed two residents and wounded several others. During the shooting Hasanov was killed. At the court Askerov and Guliyev said they just wanted to visit their homes and the graves of the beloved ones. They did not recognize the charges against them. -06D-
