Baku/25.01.19/Turan: The goal of the hunger strike of a group of activists in prisons was to demonstrate resistance to repressions of the authorities against political prisoners, reads the statement sent by the political prisoner, youth activist Ilkin Rustamzade to Turan.

"We were on a hunger strike action not for the release of Mehman, ourselves, or any other individuals in particular. Our goal was to demonstrate unity and resistance to repressions of the authorities against political prisoners," writes Rustamzade.

He also expressed his attitude to the idea of a new rally demanding the release of political prisoners.

"I personally, as a political prisoner, do not advocate a repeated action and the creation of additional tension in society. The society should save its strength for more important and necessary goals," Rustamzade continued.

In particular, the forces of society should be consolidated to prevent the possible deployment of Russian troops in Azerbaijan, he said.

On January 13 the convicted in the jail N13 Ilkin Rustamzale, Bayram Mamedov, Ahsan Nuruzade, and Elchin Ismayilli began a hunger strike in solidarity with Mehman Huseynov.

Political prisoners from other jails, Giyas Ibrahimov, Fuad Ahmedli, and Orhan Bakhyshly also joined them.

On January 23, the hunger strike was terminated after the authorities stopped a new criminal charge against Mehman Huseynov. -06D-
