Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS) regarded the verdict on against Facebook activist, Omar Mammadov, as an indicator of absence of Internet freedom in Azerbaijan. Mammadov was arrested on January 24, 2014 on charges of illegal drug possession and trafficking. The statement of the IRFS refers to the statement of the President Ilham Aliyev on June 24 at the PACE session in Strasbourg that the Internet in Azerbaijan is free.
However, despite the measures by the Azerbaijani government on accelerating the development of ICT, on-line activists and bloggers are persecuted for criticizing the authorities and the publication of corruption. Currently, six bloggers and on-line activists are in prison on trumped up charges of drug possession and disorderly conduct. Mammadov's arrest, the statement noted, is an intimidation of others who criticize the government.
The IRFS called for the release of 10 journalists and six bloggers, and provide conditions for the normal functioning of journalists and bloggers. -05D06-
