IRFS urged Baku to stop persecuting its critics abroad
Baku/17.06.22/Turan: The Institute of Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) has called on the country's authorities to stop persecuting its critics abroad.
"The attempted "contract killing" of political émigré and blogger Mohammad Mirzali was described as "shocking". Two alleged assassins were detained on June 14, 2022, in France. Note that Mirzali had been assassinated twice before.
Customers of these crimes are high-ranking members of Azerbaijan's ruling elite who consider themselves offended by the blogger's public appearances on the "Made in Azerbaijan" page on Youtube and Facebook.
In Europe, attacks against Azerbaijani political migrants are on the rise. In April, Manaf Jalilzadeh, a blogger living in Switzerland, was attacked. The strangers who beat him up demanded in Azerbaijani language to stop criticizing the authorities.
In recent weeks, bloggers Tural Sadygly and Orkhan Agayev have been under surveillance in Germany by unknown assailants.
Earlier, Rafael Piriyev and Gabil Mammadov, critics of the Azerbaijani authorities, were attacked in Germany.
IRFS calls on the European authorities to carry out a thorough and effective investigation into the crimes committed against these individuals and provide them with effective protection.
The Council of Europe should demand that the Azerbaijani authorities stop such punitive actions against their critics. -06D-
