Journalist Elchin Ismayilli Arrested
The journalist Elchin Ismayilli, who works and lives in the Ismayilli district of Azerbaijan, has been arrested and accused of extortion. The journalist denies the accusation.
According to the lawyer Islam Ismayilov, the journalist was detained on February 17 in the Ismayilli region. He is charged under Art. 182.2.2 (extortion by threats, committed repeatedly) and 308.2 (abuse of power, resulting in serious consequences) of the Criminal Code.
According to the investigators, the journalist allegedly threatened a worker of the Ismayilli District Department of Tourism and Culture with the possible spread of negative information about him. "He complained to the State Security Service and Ismayilli was arrested while receiving the money," the lawyer said.
But the journalist said the official was an old friend of his, and he asked him to lend him AZN 1,000.
The journalist believes the prosecution is fabricated to punish him for his professional activities.
The case was referred to the Investigation Department for Serious Crimes at the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan. On February 18 by the decision of the Nasimi District Court a preventive measure of arrest for 24 days was taken against him. Ismailly is imprisoned in the Kurdakhani detention center.
Ismayilli is also a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).
According to the Deputy Chairman of PFPA, a provocation was committed against the journalist and he was arrested by an order in connection with the critical publications about the "illegal activities" of the chief executive of the Ismayilli region, Mirdamet Sadigov.
Ismailly at various times worked with a variety of media in the country, including the opposition newspaper Azadlig and the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty.
Previously, he was subjected to pressure for his coverage of the problems of local residents. He was subjected to physical attacks, police detention and defamation suits.
In January 2013, when the Ismayilli unrest occurred, Ismayilli actively covered the events. At the same time his brother, who, during the protests was not in the town, was convicted on charges of involvement in the riots. -06D--

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
