Journalists Appeal Not Satisfied
Baku / 14.02.18 / Turan: The Sheki Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Elchin Huseynov, did not satisfy the complaint of the journalist Elchin Ismayilli. The complaint raised the issue of termination of criminal proceedings on justifiable grounds.
On September 18, 2017, the Sheki Grave Crimes Court sentenced Ismayilli to nine years' imprisonment, having found him guilty under art. 182 (extortion by threats), 308 (abuse of power) and 311 (taking bribes) of the Criminal Code,
The defense considers the verdict unreasonable, since the accusation was not proved in court.
Ismayilli was arrested on February 17. According to the investigation, he allegedly extorted money from district officials, threatening to publish compromising materials. Ismayilli cooperated with various independent media and covered economic and social problems in the Ismayilli region. -03B06--
