Model UN Security Council Conference on cyber security

On Monday in Baku at the Four Seasons Hotel,  the first conference of the model UN Security Council: "The participation of youth in decision-making and policy implementation" opened.  The forum will last until October 25th.

During the conference, representatives of young people - students and graduates of the 15 countries and members of the UN Security Council, will hold a simulated discussion on global cyber security.

A video address to the conference was made by the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.

"Model UN conference will help educate on measures to improve standards for combating cyber crime. I am convinced that you will better understand the role of the UN in a globalizing world," said the Secretary General of the UN.

Youth and Sports Minister, Azad Rahimov, expressed the view that the discussions in the framework of a model of the conference, with the participation of 45 young people from 15 countries, will contribute to international efforts in the field of cyber security.

Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, Ali Abbasov, said that cyber security is among the 4 main types of global crime along with trafficking in drugs, people and weapons.

He pointed to the absence of an international legal framework to combat cyber crime. However, the growing development of the Internet and connection to it means that in 2020 15 billion devices worldwide will require an international agreement within the framework of the UN.

Deputy Foreign Minister, Araz Azimov, also pointed to the lack of common definitions in the world of cyber security, which hinders the effectiveness of the fight against cyber crime.

ICT know no borders and therefore it is necessary for effective international cooperation to curb the use of the Internet for cyber-crime and terrorism. Azimov reported the cooperation of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia in the field.

Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Youth, Ahmad Alhandavi, noted the importance of access to safe Internet. However, he called on delegates to pay attention not only to the UN Security Council procedures, but also to the principles of the United Nations - democracy, human rights and a dignified life, security and peace.

UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Antonius Broek, said the conference is a good opportunity for young people and the development of vision and skills in the field of diplomacy.

The conference is organized by UNDP and the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan.

The participants will have two-day training organized by the Department of Public Information of the United Nations.

The simulated session of the UN Security Council on cyber security will be held in the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. -06D -
