National Council against the President`s initiative on the referendum
The Coordination Council of the National Council of Democratic Forces on its extraordinary session on July 19 expressed serious concern about the President Ilham Aliyev's initiative to hold a referendum extending his term. The proposed amendments to the Constitution, according to members of the Council, in fact lead to the usurpation of power, and further weakening of the democratic institutions of the state. It was decided to make a special statement in this regard.
The Coordination Council also considered a number of topical issues, including the progress of the trial of the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party Fuad Gahramanli and members of the "Muslim unity" organization led by Taleh Bagirzade.
The Coordination Council believes that the most closed conditions of the trial indicate prejudice and call into doubt the accusations. The participants also expressed serious concern with anti-legal suspension of broadcasting ANS TV, despite the fact that the channel took a pro-government stance in their work, and considers these actions of the authorities as a pressure on freedom of speech.-0-
