NIDA activists consider the appeal on June 23
A preliminary hearing on the appeal of NIDA activists is scheduled for June 23. Hearings will be held in Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Hasan Ahmedov, the lawyer Nemat Kerimli told Turan.
According to him, the defense will insist on the justification of all the eight young people convicted on trumped-up and politically motivated charges.
Activists of NIDA: Bakhtiyar Guliyev, Shahin Novruzlu, Mamed Azizov, Zaur Gurbanly Rashad Hasanov, Uzeyir Mammadli, Rashadat Akhundov and Ilkin Rustamzade (at the time of his arrest was a member of the Free Youth) were arrested in March - May 2013.
On May 6, 2014 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes convicted them of planning riots during a protest on March 10, 2013, illegal possession of explosives and narcotics, as well as disorderly conduct and sentenced them to prison terms ranging from 6 to 8 years.
The young people rejected the charges and said the political motives of the prosecution. However, in early June, one of the convicts Bakhtiyar Guliyev withdrew from the organization and appealed to the President for pardon and refused his lawyers.
As explained by the lawyer Fariz Namazly, the activist’s appeal was made before his statement. Therefore, the complaint says that he rejects the accusation and asks for justification. Now, his position will be known at the appeal hearing in court.
Recall that Amnesty International has recognized all the convicted "prisoners of conscience". -06D-
