Presentation of Project to Combat Trafficking
Baku / 12.06.17 / Turan: A presentation of the joint project of the European Union with the International Organization for Migration on strengthening the fight against trafficking was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Monday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev noted the fight against trafficking as one of the priorities of the country's government.
The head of the European Union representation in Azerbaijan, Malena Mard, said that recently there has been an increase in crimes in the field of trafficking, so cooperation on this issue is very important.
The head of the Anti-Trafficking Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Heydar Heydarov said that crimes in this area make up only 1% of the total number of crimes.
Thus, in 2015, 128 facts of trafficking were recorded, and in 2016 there were 166. Over the past 12 years 1,078 criminal cases have been investigated, and 486 traffickers, including more than 100 organized groups, have been brought to justice.
The representative of the International Organization for Migration Serhan Aktoprak said that currently 250 million people in the world are migrants, plus 750 million internal migrants. Only in 2015, the number of refugees was 25 million, and internally displaced persons were 40 million. In 2015, 78,000 people became victims of trafficking in the world.
He expressed his confidence that the implementation of this program in Azerbaijan will help alleviate the severity of the problem and achieve a real improvement in the situation.
The head of the Department of Assistance to Migrants of the UN Office in Azerbaijan Sharon Tuladar said the main goal of the project is to protect victims of trafficking and potential victims, and ensure their rights. -03C-
