Prosecutor General's Office Discussed Ganja Events

Baku / 07.31.19 / Turan: During the meeting, the Prosecutor General's Office on July 31 discussed the events in Ganja in July 2018 - an attempt on the life of the head of the city, Elmar Veliyev, and the subsequent unrest.

As Prosecutor General Zakir Haralov said in his speech, in a criminal case opened on June 3, 2018 against terrorist acts in Ganja, attempted murder, violent seizure of power and other crimes of Yunis Safarov and other radical religious people, organized members of a criminal group were involved , while 11 more people are on the international wanted list.

In addition, the investigation of the criminal case initiated on July 10, 2018 against radical religious groups that committed acts of violence and mass riots and killed two policemen, led to the arrest of 61 people.

Since November 2018, eight criminal cases against 60 people have been completed and sent to court. The defendants were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.

In several other criminal cases, the trials are continuing.

Speaking about the fight against crime in general, Garalov noted the success of the prosecution authorities and called on his staff to take measures to strengthen the fight against corruption. At the same time, he stressed the need to use modern technologies in his work.

* Recall that on July 3, 2018, the head of the executive power of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev, and his guard were attacked by a Yunis Safarov armed with a pistol. Both of them survived, and the attack was regarded as a terrorist attack.

Law enforcement authorities were quick to regard what happened as an attempt to seize power with the aim of creating an Islamic state in Azerbaijan.

Shortly thereafter, calls appeared in social networks to go to a rally in defense of Safarov in Ganja on July 10. According to the official version, during the dispersal of the rally, protesters killed two police officers.-21D-
