REAL urges the court not to impose an ordered sentence against I.Mamedov and T.Yagublu
Baku/17.03.14/Turan : Civic Movement Republican Alternative (REAL) issued a statement which condemned the prosecutor 's call to condemn the accused in Ismayilli events. Sentencing in the case, including the leader of the REAL Ilgar Mamedov and deputy chairman of "Musavat" Tofig Yagublu, is scheduled for March 17.
"The trial on the Ismayilly events is coming to end, and on March 17 court will announce the sentence. The state prosecutor asks to condemn innocent people for crimes they have not committed. He called to condemn political opponent of the authorities, Ilgar Mamedov to long prison sentence," reads the statement.
If such conviction is made, the movement will never accept this. "Events in Ukraine have shown once again that all peoples have the power to rise up and overthrow dictators, which put their political opponents in prison on trumped up charges, and the international community sees an expression of the popular will, as a legitimate," said in a statement.
The authors of the statement called on judges not to impose an ordered sentence Mammadov Yagublu and other defendants.
"Now everything depends on the authorities, and at this crucial moment there is an opportunity for dialogue. The release of all political prisoners would be a historic opportunity for Azerbaijan," reads the statement.—06D--
